Top 10 Sports Beefs in the DMV (Current)
LU | Nov 19, 2009 | Comments 2
With all the Tony Kornheiser/Mike Wise radio battling going on, we thought it may be nice to analyze some of the other sporting beefs that are currently going on in the DMV area.
Tony Kornheiser vs Mike Wise-
Over the last couple of days this media rivalry has really started to boil over the radio waves. Former Washington Post columnist and current radio guru Tony Kornheiser has been trading jabs with current Washington Post columnist and radio personality Mike Wise. Both have been employed by the Post, both have their own radio shows, both from New York and evidently both do not like each other. One thing that helps fuel this rivalry is the fact that they work for rival radio stations, but besides that the following is why they are fighting. Tony has ridiculed Wise on his show saying that a certain columnist does not know what he is talking about and that anyone that has only been here 5 years cannot write about DC sports. Mike Wise on the other hand has basically said that Kornheiser is a washed up journalist, that is sucking up do Dan Snyder and is no longer the voice of DC sports. This beef is currently going on daily and you can tune in on 980 am (Tony’s show) or 106.7 fm (Mike’s show) to hear more. Let the show down begin.
Gilbert Arenas vs Caron Butler-
This is really a war of words between the two and the media and should not be taken seriously unless the Wizards continue in their losing ways (2-7 SMH). This stems from the two all stars giving up comments about distributing the ball and who takes what shots when. Take for example this quote from Gil after one of the many losses from this losing streak “We need a whole starting five to pass the ball. Just can’t have two people getting assists on this team,” he said. “That’s the way it’s been going the last five games.” Here he did not mention any names but one Caron Butler comes to mind as he has had multiple games with no assist.
Here’s a quote from Butler on Earl Boykins who played his first game with the Wizards against Detroit “He was a guy that distributed the ball and made plays, got into the paint, made plays and a lot of times I was playing a two-man game with him. He was finding me, throwing the ball back, which was something I wasn’t accustomed to. He was throwing the ball back and getting me nice little shots, getting other guys into the offense, so he’s a pleasure to have out there, definitely.” Does that sound like a little bit of Gilbert bashing to you? It does to me…any way with the captain Antawn Jamison coming back hopefully these losses will turn around and everyone will be happy.
Wizards vs The Curse of Les Boulez-
Speaking of Antwan Jamison and Tony Kornheiser the Curse of Les Boulez strikes again (damn I hate that curse). Kornheiser coined this phrase for all the mishaps and injuries that the Bullets/Wizards sustained after winning the Finals in 1978. This year the curse has wrought about 8 injuries where players had to miss games in only 9 games…WOW! This was supposed to be the year Gilbert, Caron and Jamison finally prove to the world that the Wizards could be a top contender in the East and what happens? Jamison goes down in the preseason followed by a slew of injuries to old and new players alike. The curse is definitely real folks. Well being a optimist I say that it is better to get the injuries out of the way early so we can make a run at the playoffs later (crosses fingers…take that curse)
Redskins Fans vs Dan Snyder-
This has been a long battle which came to a head this season. The fans have been angry for years about the parking, prices of food, and the seating in Fedex Field. This year has been even worse. Fans feel the management of the team is awful, the way he treats “special players” is awuful and worst of all the way that Snyder has decreed that sign were not allowed in the stadium for games. WTF? Now the owner has tried to make some amends by issuing a public apology for the teams play and even though it was right before the game Dan finally gave in and is now allowing signs at Fedex again. We wont even bring up the fact that Snyder tried to sue fans over season tickets. SMH
Agent 0 vs The serious Gilbert-
Some media has said that with all the losing, missed shots and turnovers Gilbert Arenas is in a serious identity crisis. Gil had started off the year saying that he was no longer Agent 0 and that he would be more focused and serious about his game. He even vowed to stave off reporters and keep to himself. Well after his and the teams rocky start, and after the Miami game where D. Wade basically showed him how to take over a team, Gil said that he would drop his serious persona and don the mask of Agent 0 once again along with his quirkiness. Sounds like a good idea, only the next game against Detroit he still looked mediocre and the team lost yet again. So this battle looks to be dead and maybe he should just try playing ball and forget all of these freakin characters.
Redskins fans vs DC Cowboy fans-
Redskins vs Cowboys is one of the oldest and greatest rivalries in NFL history. Us Redskins have great pride and joy from our team. But Washington DC has been infested for years with these so call DALLAS Cowboy fans (satellite fans is what I call them). Yeah year after year us bewildered Skins fans have to hear how these fans that lived in the DMV all of their lives love the Cowboys and how they will win every year. Of course my home town Skins fans stay strong, which produces many arguments and debates amongst, coworkers, family and our friends (we even have some Cowboy fans working for DLR). It seems like this will be an ongoing battle as long as Dallas is in our division and these DC Cowboy fans keep rooting for a team half a country away.
John Riggins vs Redskins Management-
My man John Riggins has made it a point to attack the Washington Redskin management multiple times this year, even in his Rambo gear in the middle of some forest. I don’t understand his motives but definitely see where he is coming from when he says that things are screwed up. He has called Zorn a high school coach, thrashed Vinny and said that Snyder has a black heart and that the Redskins will not win if the management does not change. Now on the other side of the coin, Dan Snyder’s radio station 980 had canceled John Riggins show and given him the boot. So, while John Riggins may be fighting for the fans and his beloved team, he may also want revenge against Snyder.
Vinny Cerrato vs Jim Zorn-
Old Vinny has a bunch of enemies that he probably doesn’t even know about (delusional), but his main adversary right now is Jim Zorn. Zorn was given the job by Vinny and Dan even though he had only been a quarter back coach in the NFL. First year was mediocre and the present year has been totally abysmal. So first Vinny brings in bingo calling Sherm Lewis as an offensive consultant. And if that wasn’t bad enough, among the rumors that Zorn would be fired, Cerrato makes Lewis the playcaller for the team and tells him he will like it or quit. Boy you talk about taking somebody’s manhood. This battle has been a bit one-sided as I have not seen any evidence of Zorn standing up for himself. The ironic thing is that if Zorn fails Cerrato may be right behind him exiled from Redskins Park. (one can always dream)
The Redskins Offense vs The Redskins Defense-
Well in the first half of the season the defense was the only thing to write home about, but after the last 2 games the defense has given up 4 long touch downs to the Eagles and Denver and tackling has been a little suspect. On the other hand the Redskins Offense put up the most running yards all year not to mention the most points put up all year at 27 in the last game. If these two foes can find enough common ground to work together who knows the Skins may be a decent team. LOL
Al Haynesworth vs Oxygen-
Now this is a pretty darn good battle right here. Big Albert Haynesworth the $100 million man landed in a Redskins uniform. We expected big things from Big Al. Well after half a season we find that Al has a very tough foe that makes it hard for him to be the best $100 million man he can be. That foe would be OXYGEN. I don’t know what conditioning drills they did or didn’t do but man this guy is always sucking air. I admit he has done some nice things on defense but damn it seems like he is always coming out of the game at crucial times. Isn’t playing downs what the Skins are paying him for? And at least once in every game this year he has gone down with an injury only to come back in later on. Is this his trick to combat the lack of oxygen? I don’t know but oxygen is winning this battle hands down.

Gilbert Arenas was averaging somewhere around 30pts a game in the first few games of the season. Then the news of Shaquille O’neal bangin his fiancee hit the net and his play went downwards immediately after that. What do you think the real reason Shaq wasn’t at the game last night was? I think it was because of that. Gilbert will be back, its not everyday you find out a big 7ft guy is bangin your fiancee and the mother of your kids.
LOL you may be right about that. Was it just a coincidence that Shaq didn’t play last game?
